The Kerteh-Kemaman-Kuantan Railroad

The Kerteh-Kemaman-Kuantan railroad is a 77-kilometre long route which connects the integrated petrochemical complex in Kerteh, Terengganu to Gebeng, Pahang and the Kuantan Port. The railway line is capable of hauling cargo in large volumes and in bulks, thus making it a highly economical, safe, reliable and consistent mode of transportation for the movement of raw materials and finished products of petrochemical materials.

This route reflects the commitment of both State Governments (Terengganu and Pahang) to provide a safe and reliable mode of transportation which further boosts the East Coast of Peninsular Malaysia to become Asia-Pacific’s leading petrochemical hub.

Currently, there are two return services operating daily and the rail service can transfer up to 80 containers at one time. Apart from transporting petrochemical products, the railway link is also opened for general freight transport operated by Keretapi Tanah Melayu Berhad (KTMB), the main rail operator of Peninsular Malaysia. The rail link crosses five districts in Kemaman (Kerteh, Kemasik, Ulu Chukai, Binjai and Banggul) in Terengganu and Sungai Karang in Pahang.

Features of Kuantan-Kerteh railway:

• • A single line track which links the Petronas oil refinery complex and the nearby town of Kerteh, Terengganu, with the petrochemical complex in Gebeng, Kuantan and Kuantan Port near Kuantan, Pahang.
  • 3 railway yards at Kerteh, Gebeng and Kuantan.
  • 2 locomotives.
  • 50 wagons (BCFs) with 60 metric tonnes (2 teus) capacity for each.
  • 2 units of guard vans (BGVs).
